Director's Update

Fall 1 - 2017

Dear EPI Friends & Alumni,

WOW! I can think of no better way to begin a new term than with a once-in-a-lifetime event: On Aug. 21, North America experienced a coast-to-coast solar eclipse, and USC was one of the very best viewing locations. EPI students were given free eclipse glasses to enjoy the celestial show. Whether you were on campus or in a more exotic location, I hope you had the chance to savor that same magical moment that we experienced here.

Speaking of magical moments, in this edition of EPI Update, you'll see two stories outlining some of the wonderful ways in which EPI students have benefited from their time living, studying, and traveling in the United States. If you'd like to share a story about the ways in which EPI has impacted your life, feel free to write us epi-info@epi.sc.edu. Maybe you'll be featured in a future edition of EPI Update.

This term, EPI has made some changes to enhance the student experience. First, we have increased the total hours of instruction each week from 20 to 21.6. Second, we've shortened the term duration by one week (while maintaining the overall number of hours of instruction per term) so that our calendar better aligns with the university calendar. This makes it easier for EPI students to participate in university events and other facets of campus life. It also means that a third change is possible: EPI students now have the opportunity to LIVE ON CAMPUS! Some of them may even have the opportunity to room with American students. You may wonder where they will be staying; that's a great question. EPI students can now live in the Carolina International House at Maxcy College (http://housing.sc.edu/maxcy/), an international living-learning community whose residents receive a wide array of extra-curricular and academic enrichment activities. This is great news for all of our current and future students.

At EPI, we continue to benefit from the recommendations and referrals of our former students. If you studied at EPI, we hope you will consider telling your friends and family members about our program. In fact, we've started a fun contest for former students who refer someone to study in EPI. The details are in the Fall 1 - 2017 Edition of the EPI Update e-mail newsletter. Be sure to read the details to learn how you can win an Amazon Fire 7 tablet just by referring someone to EPI!

Kind regards,

Dr. Wesley Curtis
